Laurelhurst Park (december 2012)

IMG_0286

My birthday was pretty low-key this year, but we did spend the afternoon at Laurelhurst park checking out the ducks and letting Olive run free. She got so freakin' muddy, but she was soo happy.

IMG_6083 photo-1

Lots of Daddy Daughter time lately, especially since Mama went back to work. The picture on the right is of our new Saturday morning routine... a walk to the nearby coffee shop, which we ADORE!

She can only reach her feet when her cloth diapers are off... those toes goes into her mouth as soon as possible!

Olive is getting much less play on the blog these days, but she still loves to cuddle with her mama on the couch, especially after her sister goes to bed!

Happy Birthday Olive!

Olive turned TWO while we were in Missouri. We seriously love that girl and I was sad not to be with her on her birthday, so I had to make up for it with a little celebration when we returned.

I made a 'cake' using this recipe for both Olive and Mickey - his birthday is just a few days after hers.

2nd birthday

They LOVED it! And FYI - there was no puking or other unpleasantness as a result of the cake!

2nd birthday

We can't believe how lucky we are to have this girl in our life. We knew she was cute from the beginning, but I don't think either of us knew what a treasure she would become. She is such a sweet, disobedient, and cuddly girl.

2nd birthday

Her favorite things: jumping up and greeting new people (much to our dismay), licking those same people (more dismay), running off leash - especially after birds or other small creatures, cuddling - always has to be touching some part of you, and, of course, treats!

Pre-Edrie: Labor Day

I've been meaning to get these pics up forever and I'm just going to post a slideshow of them all so I don't have to weed through them. One of you guys saw us this day, right? You should have said hello!!

Anyway, Labor Day in Oregon was hot - and Grant and I, in our usual style wanted to fit a lot in. We decided we first wanted to go downtown and walk Olive through Washington Park, something we loved to do when we lived down there. We walked all through the park and to the Rose Garden. I was enormously pregnant and got lots of looks and questions, but was totally comfortable and capable of walking that far.
Then we wanted to spend the rest of the day in some water. For some reason, a cool river sounded dreamy in my giant state. We drove down along the Clackamas River and we were searching for a spot that wasn't too crowded. We asked a local who had riverfront property and he offered to let us just get in behind his house. We felt awkward, but took him up on it. I was right - it was totally dreamy. I just sat in the water on some rocks for three hours. We had a picnic lunch and Olive sat on a rock nearby. I loved those last few weekends I was pregnant - we were forced not to plan much in advance and neither of us could go out of town so we just spent the days together - all of which seemed to end up sunny and perfect!

Boo to Bees

I haven't written about our baby girl much lately. She is still the mutual love of our life. Grant can't imagine that the baby could possibly be cuter than Olive! She is constantly showered with hugs and kisses and has even won the right to sleep in our room - as long as she stays on her own bed. She's adjusted well to the multiple moves and likes having a playmate in my parent's dog. She is uber spoiled getting to go on off-leash walks twice a day - once by me in the morning and usually a second time with my mom in the evening. I think she is going to handle being a big sister very well - this baby will be covered in dog saliva, but I doubt there will be any hard feelings either way.

right when we got back from our walk

Anyway, last week I was walking the dogs in this wooded area we walk in everyday. They are both off-leash but stay close - Olive likes to investigate in the bushes and brush and Mickey stays at my feet usually. This morning - Olive ran back over to us kind of shaking her head and scratching at her muzzle a bit. She didn't seem that perturbed and ran back off. I didn't think much of it - figured she tried to go too deep into one of the blackberry bushes or something. Fast forward half an hour as we are walking back toward the house. I notice the left side of her muzzle is really swollen all of a sudden. It was probably a few inches thick and growing. I called the nearest vet and they said she probably got stung by a bee and to give her some benadryl. Hmm... ok. We got back to the house and I searched, but we didn't have benadryl.

the worst of it - on the way to the vet. look at all those ugly hives!

I could kick myself for leaving her and am lucky that things turned out okay, but I ran to the store to get some benadryl because I didn't think the zyrtec we had would act as quickly. When I got back poor puppy looked awful. She seriously looked like a monster and was SO distraught. She didnt' know what was happening to her. She was scratching at her face and throwing herself on the floor. I'm so lucky her throat never swelled up. Her face was completely swollen - her eyes were just little slits and she had hives on her entire body. I got an initial dose of benadryl in her and called the vet to tell them I was on my way in.

as the first dose of benadryl set in and her swelling started to subside

Poor baby - they said they don't usually see reactions this bad. They gave her an IV dose of corticosteroids and told me to keep her on the bendadryl and prednisone for several days. Happily, the swelling on most of her face and the hives were gone within a few hours. Later that evening I gave her an additional dose of benadryl and her first oral prednisone taking care of the rest of her swelling. It took her 5 or so days to get back to her normal self, but she is fine! I can't tell you how afraid I was - seriously, this dog is like my baby and I can't even think of what a mess I'd be if something happened to her. I called the vet back and asked for an EpiPen so I could dose her if she started going anaphylactic after another sting...they kind of laughed at me and said they don't prescribe EpiPens for dogs. I'm gonna keep working on it...

Belly Cuddles

belly cuddles

The worst thing anyone has said to me since I've been pregnant was that I'd forget about her as soon as the baby got here. I teared up. She is one of my bestest friends.

laundry day

Laundry Day

This is Olive's role on laundry day - to touch her body to as many piles of clean clothes as possible while laying in the sunniest spot on the bed. She is experiencing her version of pure bliss.

Happy Birthday Puppy!

olive is one

Okay so I totally gave in and got Olive treats on her actual birthday before we made the trek to STL so I could work that night. Grant was still out of town, but I felt like she needed something on her big day. I went to the local puppy bakery and got her a special birthday bone and a new toy...one that she supposedly can't tear up in two seconds flat.

olive is one

needless to say, she was VERY interested in what I had for her! she is so naughty and not supposed to get up there, but so freakin' cute!!

olive is one

she liked it A LOT!

olive is one

when I also put the toy down she didnt' know what to do. she kept looking at me like, 'what do you expect me to do with all this good fortune?!' and then would go back to alternating between biting the toy and the bone.

we missed celebrating with papa, BUT i think she had a good birthday!

she is ONE!

can you believe our little girl turns ONE YEAR OLD today? that blows my mind! remember the day we got her and she didn't even weigh 5lbs..now she is a giant in comparison! she has added lots of chaos and sometimes turmoil to this little life of ours, but SO much love and laughter too. we really REALLY can't imagine life without her. grant is out of town so we are planning a little birthday celebration when he gets back - a little cake, some toys, maybe even a birthday hat!

we love you little poliver - happy 1st birthday!

Oh Olive!

IMG_1799

This is what she does EVERY TIME we go to the dog park. She is like a pig rolling in the mud. She is the only one who chooses to torture their mom like this AND she refuses to go in the water to rinse off. Usually resulting in a full on bath when we get home. Its all good though because she LOOOOOVES the dog park SO much. If you tell her we are going she flips - just can't contain herself.

IMG_1800

All the other dogs wondering what the heck she is doing. You like how her legs are all sprawled out back so she can get maximum belly to mud application?

IMG_3430

She is LOVING life.

IMG_3437

Always with the tongue.

Olive and the Pellingers were best buds by the time they left - she cuddled up with them and was totally over G and I!

Camping Round 2!

About a month ago we went on our second camping trip of the summer. The first time we went to the lake with Lainey & Dan. This time two other couples joined us and one even brought a boat! Isn't Olive so cute all hot in her crate? We dropped her off at the doggie resort on the way down so that she didn't have to be left alone while we were on the water all day. It was also over 100 degrees (like it always is in Missouri..) and she doesn't like that so much.

We were the first to arrive so we enjoyed a smooch and the view...

That night we all got settled, made some burgers and hung out around the campfire. SO.MUCH.FUN!

Saturday we spent all day on the boat in the water. It was awesome - I got a little sea sick (as usual), but everyone else loved it! This is Grant trying his hardest to get up on those darn ski's.

We stopped and parked the boat to get some lunch - this is the whole gang!

Later in the day Grant was able to successfully knee board - looks fun, huh?? I'm not one for water sports so I opted out!

The rest of the weekend we spent doing more of the same - grilling, campfire chats, and some more boating - although it rained on sunday making the latter a bit difficult. We are REALLY hoping to get at least one more camping trip in this year so we can bring Olive with us...we'll keep you posted!

more of this

it has been a while. how are you all? i'm so out of touch with my little space on the internets. life has thrown some seriously heavy blows and required lots of deep breaths the past few weeks. you may have noticed that the blog went private for a time, but i decided that wasn't necessary and opened it back up. i like you all too much not to have you share our life!

it has been seriously rough and those two over there have been a huge support, along with my friends and family (don't know what i'd do without you all!). the tears and frustration keep coming, but i'm feeling a little better all the time. the positives are: i am DONE with nursing school, i have a job, and did i mention... I AM DONE WITH NURSING SCHOOL??

i really am so ready to have a 'regular' life where there is some sense of financial stability and lots of time to spend as i wish. the next few months will be spent transitioning into that life. I.CAN.NOT.WAIT.

i will be back over the next few days with updates about the past few weeks, but i will leave you with a sweet video of my loves. can you get over how sweet and cuddly she is?? her life is complete if she has one of us close and we are indulging her in a belly rub. love her.
